What in the world is EFT, or tapping? It is a technique that works and has been proven by scientific research. It is so powerful it is used to treat PTSD for war veterans. Check out this article from Psychology Today entitled, Energy Therapy Tapping: PTSD ends quickly with this new treatment.
Emotional freedom technique for anxiety has helped a lot of people. Tapping can also help with fears, phobias, negative emotions, addictions, illness, injury, and cravings. It can also be used for positivity, like creating more happiness, spirituality, and being more connected. Tapping for spirituality can lead to new insights or “a-ha” moments to get you clear on life decisions.
This technique was first discovered back in the 1980s by Dr. Roger Callahan. He worked with many patients who had major fears and phobias. He did extensive training not only in the psychiatry world but also studied the meridians found within our body and how different acupuncture points affected various organs.
He had a client with a deep fear of water, but in one of their sessions, she said her stomach hurt. Because of his knowledge of acupressure or acupuncture points, he knew there was a point under the eye that directly was linked to the stomach. So, to ease her pain with that, he instructed her to tap under her eye. While she was tapping, they were discussing her water fear. Within minutes, the stomach pain was gone, and so was the fear of water. The story goes that she went outside to the pool and started splashing her face with water, which her phobia would never allow her to do before. With this information, Dr. Callahan began working out a tapping algorithm to use with his patients to have more consistent results.
Next came along Gary Craig, who didn’t have any experience with psychiatry. But, he was very intrigued by this information. He began studying Dr. Callahan’s work. Using his engineering background he created his own algorithm to help anybody do this technique without consulting a doctor.
That work brought about EFT or tapping. Gary Craig concluded that all negative emotions are a disruption in the body’s energy system. If you think of the body’s energy system like a big complex electrical circuit system, negative energies can cut off the flow within the circuit system. The use of tapping can remove those disruptions and get the circuit system running smoothly again or get your energy system corrected.
Energy disruptions in the body are the reason we have any emotional outcome like grief, anger, guilt, depression, trauma, and fear. Negative emotions come about because we are tuned into certain thoughts or circumstances, which, in turn, cause our energy systems to disrupt. Otherwise, we would function normally.
Acupuncturists study and use over 300 meridian points on the body, where tapping uses just a few. Tapping differs in that no formal training is required to realign disruptions of your energy on your own. Using a technique that involves 8 to 12 meridians is all that is needed to correct any energy disruptions. To release the block, you’ll physically tap the specific points along your energy meridians to begin to balance and restore your energy flow.
Tapping on these points alone will not restore your energy system. The other piece of this recipe is your mind. What you are tuned into and focused on -- your intention -- is the key ingredient to releasing your stuck energies. The intention you set during your tapping is what is going to get released and create the balance in your energy flow.
During the tapping process, information moves from our subconscious to our conscious awareness. The emotions linked to this subconscious information leads us to the blocked energy or our energy disruption.
Since dramatic events are loaded with strong judgments and emotions, it becomes difficult to release stress. We may feel overwhelmed, and maybe have developed unhealthy ways to cope with difficult emotions. Like stuffing our emotions with food or ignoring them so they get buried into our subconscious mind. This avoidance of our emotions closes off their opportunity to release because we are not acknowledging them.
This creates an energy disruption and short circuits our own electrical system. Your tapping and your intention during tapping allows you to acknowledge your emotions, address them, and release them so you can go about your day feeling calm and burden-free. It’s quite amazing.

I was introduced to tapping early on in my transformational journey. I initially thought when first learning of it that it seemed a bit silly, and I felt weird doing the tapping. But, when I was asked if I had any strong fears or phobias, the first thought that popped into my mind was, “Yes! I have a strong fear of snakes!” So, I thought, what the heck? I’ll give it a try. It would nice to not have a fear of snakes any longer.
I never had a traumatic event as a child involving snakes. I just never liked them. I didn’t like looking at them or seeing any picture of them. When I was a kid, back in the day, using an encyclopedia to do research, there’d inevitably be some giant picture of a snake under any letter of the alphabet. When I saw a snake in there, I literally threw the encyclopedia across the room to get away from it.
After I calmed down, I’d get the book and peek at the top corner of the pages to find my topic. I wouldn’t open the book until I got to my page. Then I’d slowly open up the encyclopedia to make sure no other snake would be on that page.
My parents never understood and tried to rationalize that it was just a picture. But that fear was strong and remained through my adulthood. I never thought about getting help for it because snakes aren’t in my daily life. So, I used this strong fear for my first tapping experience.
Now, I wasn’t an expert on tapping -- I was just learning. But, holy cow, it worked! Now, I’m not going to go out and get a pet snake or anything. But I’m no longer frantically trying to find the remote to change the channel or closing my eyes, and I don’t chuck pictures across the room when I see one.
If a friend called and said they had a snake in their house and needed help, I could help them… help them call 9-1-1. Ha, ha, just kidding. Yes, I actually would help them.
Now, I do want to reiterate, that tapping is used to remove energy disruptions for negative experiences and emotions, but it’s also useful for positivity as well. I like to use tapping to release emotions and create clarity in my life. I use it to clear a block for things ranging from procrastination about taking action, to help bring up big ideas that are in my unconscious & subconscious and discover how I can make those things happen. As you begin to bring this tool into your life, you’ll discover the ways it works best for you.
